Costa Rica's Caribbean region is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea to the east and the bordering countries of Nicaragua and Panama to the north and south, respectively. The Caribbean coast extends roughly 200 km between Nicaragua and Panama.
The Caribbean region is home to the province of Limón, which has a capital of the same name. Limón marks the border between the north and the south of the region, and the city serves as the main port of Costa Rica's Caribbean side. As such, it's common to see Caribbean cruise ships making a stop at Puerto Limón.
It's worth noting that the Caribbean region of Costa Rica differs significantly from a cultural point of view than other regions of Costa Rica. Life on the Caribbean includes a mixture of influences, combining indigenous heritage with African, Spanish, and other cultures.
Seasoned travelers often prefer the Caribbean region because it typically has a less commercialized feel than the Pacific regions of Costa Rica. Overall, you'll find a unique combination of relaxed culture, reggae music, smoking nightlife, and a good experience for surfers, backpackers and ecotourists.
On the Caribbean coast, you'll discover an excellent array of water activities including deep-sea fishing, ocean kayaking, surfing, scuba diving, and snorkeling. In fact, some of the best surfing in Costa Rica from December to April can be found on the Caribbean or on the western peninsula of Nicoya.
In addition to coastal activities, the Caribbean region offers excellent bird watching, horseback riding, and plenty of nature exploration opportunities.
Several national parks in the Caribbean are well worth the visit, including:
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
