Costa Rica Surfing Location Guide
Caribbean Coast
- Barra Del Colorado/Tortugero - Has some shark activity in the area and
is difficult to access. The isolated beach breaks and river mouths are
out there.
- Playa Bonita - In the north end of the cove a reef/point inconsistent,
but with a powerful dangerous left. Located 5 km north of Limon.
- Cocaine Point - Across the water you can catch the right. This break
was created during the 1991 earthquake.
- Roca Alta - A rock reef produces a powerful right. Experienced surfers
only.
- Isla Uvita - Off the Limon coast and has a reef that generates a nice
left. It holds size. Camping is permitted but there are no facilities.
20 min boat ride access only during certain times of the year.
- Isla Uvita An island off the coast of Limon. Here you will find a good
left. Isla Uvita is about a 20 minutes boat ride from Limon with passage
available at certain times of the year.
- Westfalia Area - Beach breaks left and right stretch along the coast
to the south of Limon to Cahuita. Rio Banano is a beautiful river mouth
with many other river mouths located in the area.
- Cahuita (Black Beach) - A remote beach that supports waves all year
rand has areas to surf when the other breaks don't. Definitely not a high
traffic area. Camping is permitted.

Viejo in front of Stanford's restaurant. Thick and heavy reef, also called
"salsa" breaks to the right. Advanced surfers only as this place gets
very big and tubular. Lots of cheap accommodation, food, and nightlife,
as well as other activities in and around town. Located approximately
3-1/2 by car from San Jose.
- Manzanillo - More beach break 20 km south of Puerto Viejo, Limon. Easy
access and some basic lodgings and food.
