Ecotourism in Costa Rica
What is Ecotourism?
According to The International Ecotourism Society or TIES, ecotourism is
defined as "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the
environment and improves the well-being of local people."
Costa Rican and other tour guides and companies should adhere to these
general ecotourism guidelines:
- Minimize impact – Keep tour groups small to minimize adverse impacts
to the environments and areas visited.
- Build environmental and cultural awareness and respect by providing
information and education to guests of the local cultures, habitats and
wildlife.
- Provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts.
- Provide direct financial benefits for conservation by contributing
to the
parks or the areas visited and using local transportation and locally
owned food and lodging establishments.
- Provide financial benefits and empowerment for local people by providing
employment to locals as guides and assistants.
- Raise sensitivity to host countries' political, environmental, and social
climate by cooperating with conservational organizations, private initiatives,
and researchers to help protect nature and wildlife.
- Support and sponsor international human rights and labor agreements
along with small and local environmental projects.
